The History of the Golf4Good Tournament
A Group, a Game of Golf, and a Goal
In 2006, several San Diego Presbyterians began bouncing around ideas for raising funds to support the work of Presbyterian Urban Ministries, a California 501(c)(3) inner-city outreach of the Presbytery of San Diego. A golf tournament seemed to fit San Diego like a glove.
| The first tournament committee consisted of the following six event pioneers: | |
| Bob Arthur | Faith Presbyterian Church |
| Jim Beatty | Graham Memorial Presbyterian Church |
| Herb Christ | Faith Presbyterian Church |
| Bob Collins | First Presbyterian Church El Cajon |
| Wayne Hoffman | Graham Memorial Presbyterian Church |
| Rick Moore | Graham Memorial Presbyterian Church |
2007. First Annual Tournament
Jim Beatty chaired the first annual tournament, which took place at Admiral Baker Golf Course, a private Navy-operated property in the Mission Gorge area of San Diego. The committee donated all the tournament net proceeds to the Presbytery of San Diego for exclusive use by Presbyterian Urban Ministries.
2008. Second Annual Tournament
Bob Arthur chaired the second annual tournament, which took place at Sea 'n' Air Golf Course, a private Navy-operated property in Coronado. That tournament saw a 50% increase of net proceeds over the previous year, and the committee saw substantial potential for equal or better growth in future years. All to benefit Presbyterian Urban Ministries.
2009. Third Annual Tournament
Under Rick Moore's chairmanship, the 2009 tournament committee adopted the event name Golf4Good and extended committee membership to a few more people with compassion for urban ministries and experience in and talent for developing sponsors and promoting events.
The Tournament was a sellout and the proceeds increased substantially!
2010. Fourth Annual Tournament
The Golf4Good tournament was at Sea 'N Air and was very successful. Bob Arthur and Lorna Holberg were Co-Event Administrators. The G4G
Committee has grown to 10 members and each person brings a special talent to the
group. The event is still expanding and changing in dynamics. All proceeds
benefit Presbyterian Urban Ministries.
2011. Fifth Annual Tournament
The G4G Tournament has a new venue this year and will be held at DoubleTree Golf Resort in Rancho Penasquitos. Under the leadership of Event Administrator, Jerry Edge, the G4G planning committee members are very involved in the preparation of making the 2011 Tournament better than ever. A raffle has been added that should add to the fun as well as to the profit for Presbyterian Urban Ministries, the beneficiary of Golf4Good.
